naama hofman

Industrial designer Naama Hofman has developed a series of light objects that rethink the way we use LEDs.

Naama Hofman - Light Objects 001Light Object 001 - "A light fixture made of a bended metal rod with LED illumination"

Naama Hofman - Light Objects A06Light Object A06 - "A squared flexible sheet on which an electronic circuit is printed. When the square folds into itself creating a conic shape, the circuit is closed and the LED illuminates. The smaller the cone gets the stronger the light is."

This is a wedding invitation designed by Ken Leung for himself. I think it speaks for itself.

yorktown road

We've been long time admirers of Carol Gilbert's work.  If you haven't come across Yorktown Road before, you're in for a treat.  After hand dying all of her fabrics in gorgeous saturated colors, Carol sculpts them into bags, pillows, and clothes with masterful pleats.  Each piece is truly a work of art made of textures and hues you simply cannot find anywhere else.  Be sure to check out the Yorktown Road flickr stream to see past works and process pictures.

"Thunderstorms threatened but the sun eventually came through. They swam and played until lunch. As the sun set, they collected their treasures and headed home."

heath & dwell

This weekend at Dwell on Design, Heath Ceramics, who I already love, launched some awesome geometric-tangram-pattern-tiles in collaboration with Dwell! Those tiles were pretty much my favorite thing as a kid. Gah! And the colors! Oh the possibilities!

Heath Ceramics - Dwell Patterns TileHeath Ceramics - Dwell Patterns TileHeath Ceramics - Dwell Patterns TileDwell Patterns by Heath & Dwell

"Dwell Patterns was developed in collaboration with Heath & Dwell. The line celebrates the common belief that modern design is simultaneously functional and expressive, bold and organic. When the two-dimensional shapes are matched with the long-standing qualities of Heath tiles, new patterns with handcrafted beauty and individual variation are revealed."

matthias heiderich

I can't get enough of Matthias Heiderich (aka heartbeatbox) since seeing his work over at Grain Edit a few weeks ago.  His colors and compositions are perfection.  The first photo sums up how I feel right now (unbearably hot) and the second is wishful thinking.

Typically computer generated patterns don't do it for me because they lack personality, but the drawings by David Lu of Velluminous are simultaneously precise and organic. He explains, "they are mouse gestures made in drawing software I wrote," where "the larger circles are areas drawn with greater velocity." You can read more about his method here.

These simple "air" lines make me want to travel:

lx97 - Air Lines PrintAir Lines Print by lx97

"Air Lines is an art project showing worldwide airliner routes. Every single scheduled flight on any given day is represented by a fine line from it's point of origin to it's port of destination. Thereby forming a net of thousands of lines. Hubs like JFK, FRA or DXB turn into dark knots where lines meet, lesser served local services are only a subtle hint."
